Clem Jacob Hire EHS AwardThe high quality of Waterford-based Clem Jacob Hire Centres equipment hire operation has been recognised, with the company having been announced as a Winner in the 2018 Executive Hire Show Passionate Hirer Awards, which took place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

The company was nominated in the Outstanding Single Depot Hire Company category, from no fewer than 708 outlets throughout the UK and Ireland that members of the Show team visited in the lead-up to the annual exhibition for tool and equipment hire professionals, held on 7 and 8 February.

Following ‘mystery shopper’ visits and calls to their depots, Finalists were scrutinised under a broad range of criteria including: presentation and functionality of premises; staff enthusiasm and competence; efficiency in handling enquiries and orders; quality of products and delivery vehicles; and innovation in offering a wide range of equipment and exploring new technological opportunities.

The quality of the company’s printed promotional materials and website was also assessed, along with its use of social media and supporting local community initiatives.

Established in 2006, Clem Jacob Hire has become a major presence serving the area around its Waterford location and throughout the south east of Ireland. The Award Judges were impressed by the intense enthusiasm, friendliness and positive attitude of all the company’s team, and by their obvious pride in what they do. Also noteworthy is the breadth of its hire services which, besides tool and plant hire, includes powered access machinery and event hire.

The company’s well-presented depot is an eye-catching presence in Waterford, and the business plays a valued role within its local community, sponsoring sports clubs and frequently offering free hire of equipment to support worthy causes.

Waterford Hospice Buy A BrickWaterford Hospice has today launched a ‘Buy a Brick’ appeal to help raise funds needed to reach its €6M target.

The centrepiece of the Buy a Brick appeal is an innovative new website, giving donors the opportunity to buy a virtual ‘brick’ at a price of their choice, which they can personalise with their own message.

The appeal will raise vital funds for the €6 million pledge by Waterford Hospice towards the construction of the new South East Palliative Care Unit on the grounds of University Hospital Waterford. Although €4.5 million has already been secured, a further €1.5 million is needed to reach the target.

The new South East Palliative Care Unit will be accommodated in the first two floors of the new five story €25 million build. This will include a 20 bed in patient unit, day services and a new base for the Waterford Hospice Home Care Team.

Waterford Hospice is a registered charity, and has been providing a ‘Hospice Home Care’ service (free of charge) for 30 years, to the people of Waterford & South Kilkenny. In addition to the €6M pledge, annual running costs in excess of €700K are needed to maintain this service into the future.

Danette Connolly, Chairperson said: “We’re calling on as many people as possible to get behind us by supporting our Buy a Brick appeal. By doing so, you’re also paying for a little piece of the new Hospice, and your support will become a part of our history. Please visit our website at www.waterfordhospice.ie/buyabrick’’

Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh, Waterford hurler said: I’m delighted to lend my support to Waterford Hospice for their Buy a Brick Campaign. This charity has been fundraising for the past 30 years to provide a free hospice service; I’m only too happy to oblige in giving a little of my time to help. I’d ask everyone to come on board for the final push to reach that €6M target.’’

January 2018 felt like the longest month ever and for many employees who patiently waited for their monthly paycheck to appear it must have felt like 62 days in the month instead of 31. Even though we are now into the second and shortest month of the year and Spring is on the horizon, it can be hard to shake off the winter blues with the miserable cold weather.

The winter blues can really affect productivity in the work place. It can be hard to get motivated and do the maximum amount of work when we are faced with a lack of sunlight with the shorter days. That's why it's the perfect time of year to organise a fun team building activity to elevate the mood, the work atmosphere and productivity.

It has been proven that team building activities can increase collaboration between employees and management, encourage creativity and communication and therefore improving motivation and productivity in the workplace.

There are so many team building ideas that can work for any business type and size both indoor and outdoor. If you are looking for an outdoor activity, this can include a historic country or city walk, cycling the magnificent Greenway or a group trek up the Comeragh Mountains. Outdoor games can include team sport competitions or have fun and organise a school sports day. If you feel more adventurous, how about some kayaking and water challenges at the Dunmore Adventure Centre.

Events by Carmel Grant Hawkeye Falconry

A falconry experience with Hawkeye Falconry on the grounds of the Waterford Castle is an exhilarating team experience where you all get to interact with the magnificent birds of prey.

Another fun team building idea is a treasure or scavenger hunt. Divide everyone into teams and set fun tasks or find hidden clues or locations within a time frame, then finish off the event with a fun award ceremony and refreshments or dinner. Faithlegg House Hotel and Athenaeum House Hotel both offer beautiful surroundings and perfect walks to search for treasure, or plan it around the Viking Quarter and winding streets of the city centre.

If the weather is too cold and unpredictable for an outdoor activity, there are great indoor activities available in Waterford. Run a team bowling or climbing wall challenge at Activate, test your skills and solve the puzzles in the Great Escape Rooms or enjoy some Grand Prix action at Non-Stop Karting.

Events by Carmel Grant WWalls tour

If you are looking for a more relaxing group activity, workshops can be both inspiring and confidence building like a professional developmental workshop or learn some art and craft, salsa dancing or acting skills. Try a cooking class in the Hook & Ladder, the GIY Headquarters or make arrangements and collaborate with a local restaurant. Encourage everyone to cook something and end the activity with a fun dinner. Lastly, try a themed event like a murder mystery game, a racing or a casino night.

Just a reminder for any of you that have FIRST AIDERS onsite this training is due to change from  31st May 2018!

Did you know…

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) are continuing the transition process from the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) Occupational First Aid (OFA) learner training standard to PHECC’s First Aid Response (FAR), as the recognised standard meeting the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007).

The current QQI Occupational First Aid (OFA) course is changing to PHECC (Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council) First Aid Response Training from the 31st May. The course itself remains mostly the same but we have listed the main changes below:

  • The new PHECC course will allow up to 6 trainees per course (The QQI Occupational First Aid course allowed a total of 10).
  • The current QQI certificate is valid for 2 years and then you have 90 days grace in which time you can do a 1 day refresher up to 31st May. With the new PHECC First Aid Response course the refresher training will take 2 days and there is no 90 days grace from June 1st so once the date has passed the certificate is expired and you will have to complete the course all over again.
  • First Aid Training will now take 2.5 days (instead of 3)

Please contact us for any upcoming first aid training dates as we will be running courses here in LCE Training Academy.

PLEASE NOTE for REFRESHER training we do need a copy of your current certificate in order to verify the dates – either the 3 day OFA or the most recent 1 day Refresher training certificates to attend.
