WIT HumberOn Friday 24th November, Susan Somerville, Dean of the School of Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism, Humber Institute of Technology, Toronto, visited Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and met with staff from Culinary Arts, Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Science.

Humber has been a partner of WIT for many years but the partnership with the Department of Languages, Tourism and Hospitality was initiated just this year. Welcoming Dean, Susan Somerville to WIT, Marian O’Neill, Head of School of Humanities commented that "I am particularly conscious of the importance of internationalisation which allows for enriching experiences for our students and staff. I am delighted to welcome Susan to Waterford and hope that this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship for both our institutions".

Ray Cullen, Head of Department of Languages, Tourism and Hospitality at WIT added that he was ‘particularly delighted to work with Susan and colleagues at Humber and I look forward to developing opportunities for student exchange and advanced entry and for collaboration between staff in all our areas’.

Don O’Neill, International Coordinator for the Department of Languages, Tourism and Hospitality, commented that ‘we are delighted that two of our students from the BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts will spend the next semester studying at Humber beginning in January’. Besides studying in Canada, students from the programme also have the opportunity to study at some of the world’s leading culinary institutes which are partnered with WIT in Brazil, China, France, the USA and Northern Ireland.

Programme leader for the BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts programme, Lorain Walsh added that ‘this programme is particularly unique as it includes a mandatory semester of professional placement abroad as well as a semester of study abroad giving our students a most valuable insight in world cuisine and equipping them with cutting edge skills which will make them leaders in their field on graduation’.
