Dooleys Hotel CIE Tours AwardDooley’s Hotel, Waterford is celebrating after being awarded A Gold Excellence Award and the status of ‘Best 3 Star Hotel’ in Ireland at the CIE Tours International Annual Awards of Excellence which took place in Dublin’s City Hall last night. Now in its 29th year, the annual awards of excellence recognise the best hotels and tourist attractions across Ireland and are based on feedback from over 32,000 customers throughout the year.

Dooley’s Hotel was one of 13 category winners at the prestigious awards.  In addition to Dooley’s Hotel being named Best 3 Star Hotel, the Granville Hotel, the Marine Bar and House of Waterford Crystal won Merit Awards at the prestigious ceremony.  Each of the winners achieved a customer satisfaction rating of over 92% from CIE Tours International visitors, delivering an exceptional quality experience and welcome to tourists.

The honours were presented by Vivienne Jupp, Chairman and Elizabeth Crabill, Chief Executive Officer, CIE Tours International. In total 77 hotels and tourist attractions won awards, with 13 overall category winners being awarded a Gold Award.

CIE Tours International ( is one of Ireland’s longest established heritage tour operators, celebrating 87 years in business this year.  In 2018, the company enjoyed €120 million in revenues and over 400,000 bed nights booked throughout the country. The company, which employs over 140 people between offices in Dublin, London and New Jersey, operates all-inclusive coach tours and fly-drive programmes to Ireland as well as coach tours of Britain and mainland Europe. It also provides combined tours of Ireland and the UK. It is the most successful tour operator involved in delivering tourism to Ireland from North and in 2019 is expanding its destinations with new tours to Italy and Iceland.

Chamber members must prepare NOW for the Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act

A new Act containing major employment law reforms comes into force on 1st March 2019. It’s so significant that the Minister for Employment Affairs, Regina Doherty, labelled it a “once-in-a-generation reform of our labour market.” And for good reason:

It has the potential to put every single employer in Ireland at greater risk of prosecution. But the penalties aren’t just a slap on the wrist. You could face criminal punishment.

What is the Act for?

The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018 aims to protect people who are in precarious work conditions. For example, that could be people on zero hour or short-term contracts—which no doubt includes a large portion of employees working for organisations within the current Chambers Ireland member base. But while the Act’s primary goal is to protect those in precarious work, it applies to all employees and has a major impact on employers, too.

That’s because failure to comply with the upcoming law could lead to a €5,000 fine and 12 months in prison. With such seemingly draconian penalties and the Act’s launch date looming, we break down what Chambers Ireland members need to know.

The four new provisions

Within the Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2018, there are four new provisions that are the most important. Understand each one and assess its impact on your company’s current work practices.

  1. Early issuing of five core terms of employment: From the date new employees join your business, you have five days to give them five core terms of employment in writing. If you fail to provide your employees with their written statement of core terms within one month, you will be guilty of criminal offence which is punishable by both a financial penalty and a custodial sentence.
  2. Zero hour contracts abolished: As giving greater security to those in precarious work is the Act’s primary goal, it’s no surprise to see zero hour contracts banned. The only exception is if your business faces an emergency demand for casual or short-term relief workers. However, the ban raises the prospect of a logistical nightmare for Chambers Ireland members who currently rely on zero hour contracts.
  3. Banded hours: This provision is likely to impact you if you have staff on part-time or variable hours contracts. Say you have an employee whose contracted hours are much lower than the actual hours they work. Your employee will now be entitled to request that you put them on a ‘banded hours contract’ to reflect the actual hours worked over the previous year. You may suffer payroll consequences as employees will be entitled to be paid for the minimum number of hours in the band of hours they fall into.
  4. Minimum payments if there’s no work: If you can’t offer someone any work on a certain week or you can only offer them less than 25% of their weekly contracted hours, the minimum payment affected employees receive must be no less than 3 x the national minimum wage/employment regulation order hourly rate.

How to take action

Assess whether the four new provisions put you and your senior staff at risk of prosecution, and consider the steps you need to take to comply with the laws in the short period leading up to 1st March 2019.

Royal A-Ware and Glanbia Ireland plan to build a new €140 million continental cheese facility in Belview, Ireland, creating 80 jobs

Royal A-ware, a leading global cheese and dairy producer in The Netherlands, and Glanbia Ireland, Ireland’s largest dairy processor, today announce plans to enter a strategic partnership that proposes to build a new continental cheese manufacturing facility in Belview, Co Kilkenny, Ireland.

It is proposed that a total of €140 million will be invested in this best-in-class facility. The new facility is scheduled for commissioning in 2022 and will produce continental cheeses in various formats.

Once fully commissioned, the new facility will have a production capacity of 450 million litres of milk per annum. Approximately 80 full time jobs will be created at the facility. It is expected that a further 100 temporary jobs will be created during the construction phase.

Milk used in the production process on site will be sourced from local suppliers and the cheese will be marketed and sold to global customers.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD said: “Today’s announcement of international collaboration between Royal A-ware and Glanbia Ireland is welcome news for the south east region. Growing jobs at a regional level is a key focus for government and with the looming challenge of Brexit, supporting economic growth in our regions through such actions as product diversification, thereby helping to create sustainable and quality jobs, is a huge priority for Government. I would like to congratulate Glanbia Ireland for their continued commitment to supporting the growth and development of their suppliers, further leveraging Ireland’s positive international reputation in the dairy sector.”

Michael Creed TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine said: “The agri-food sector is Ireland’s largest indigenous industry supporting over 174,000 jobs across rural Ireland, from farms to food processing. Investments like this cheese manufacturing facility in Belview are a critical response to the challenges posed by Brexit, in terms of developing new products and new markets.”

With this announcement, Royal A-ware is taking another step towards achieving its goals of working with strategic partners to build innovative and sustainable agri-food chains and offering its customers an enhanced product portfolio. It also gives our company access to additional volumes of high-quality cheese through a local supply chain.”

Jim Bergin, Chief Executive of Glanbia Ireland commented: “We are delighted to partner with Royal A-ware, a leading global producer of continental cheeses, to build a world-class cheese plant in the south-east of Ireland. This new partnership will create a new route to market for Glanbia Ireland suppliers’ milk and diversify our portfolio of consumer dairy products and ingredients. Since 2014 we have invested €343m to facilitate a 42% increase in milk production by Glanbia farmers. This proposed new investment is now required to diversify our product mix and to ensure that our suppliers have the opportunity to fulfil their growth ambitions.”

The proposed new facility will be located at a greenfield site near to Glanbia Ireland’s infant nutrition plant at Belview, Co Kilkenny. First opened in 2015, the Glanbia infant nutrition plant at Belview is a flagship manufacturing site for Glanbia Ireland and is currently the subject of a €130 million investment to install a third drier and expand production capacity.

Bus Eireann Leap Card Rose of TraleeWaterford Rose of Tralee and winner of the 2018 International Rose of Tralee, Kirsten Mate Maher, today launched a €1 Leap Card promotional single fare on Bus Éireann’s Waterford city services and Route 360 (Waterford-Tramore), commencing Sunday, 27 January until Saturday, 2 March 2019.

All cash fares will remain the same. Bus Éireann, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA), recently introduced an enhanced Waterford city network which has, so far, resulted in an increase of customer numbers by over 35%.

Further improvements are also planned in Waterford for the first half of 2019, including:

  • The rollout of bus stop infrastructure (stop specific timetable information at all stops) 
  • Later night services to Tramore - Improved bus stop locations

There are 17 new state-of-the-art city buses on the city network, which are fully accessible and feature Transport for Ireland livery. The single-deck buses operate the five W1-W5 city routes and feature a bright, new interior design. The new buses also have comfortable seating, a dedicated wheelchair space, a separate designated child buggy space, priority seats, USB sockets, complimentary Wi-Fi, CCTV security cameras throughout, as well as journey information screens.

From 27 January, customers can travel on any of the five city routes and the Route 360 between Tramore and Waterford for only €1 on a single fare when using a Leap Card. Customers are guaranteed savings of up to 30% on cash fares by using their Leap Card throughout the year. For timetable information and service improvements see

The 2018 International Rose of Tralee, Kirsten Mate Maher, said: “I’m delighted to be working with Bus Éireann on the promotion of their extended and enhanced Waterford city services. In my current role I’m on the move a lot and I travel with Bus Éireann a lot. Using public transport saves me time and energy, and it’s also better for the environment! It’s great to see that so many people are availing of the new services and I recommend anyone who hasn’t to check them out!.”

Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer, National Transport Authority (NTA) said: “The dramatic increase in passenger numbers that we have already seen in Waterford is an indication that when customers are presented with a service that is reliable and good value, they will shift to public transport.
“This is good news for the city and county of Waterford and for the environment, particularly at a time when the issue of climate change is in sharp focus.”

Speaking about the improved network and fleet changes, Michael Faherty, Bus Éireann Services Manager in Waterford said: “This major network enhancement in Waterford city has been a great success and we have seen a significant increase in passenger usage. 
The promotional fare of €1 will be of great benefit to the people of Waterford city.”
