Musgrave Love the Summer

  • 134% increase in ice cream mix – equating to over 1 million 99s
  • 26% increase in sales of instant barbecues and charcoal
  • Sales of fresh chicken up by 15% and fresh burgers up 65%
  • Burger and hot dog buns up over 50%
  • Condiments such as ketchup, mustard and vinegar up over 9%

It’s set to be the hottest summer since 1976 and the recent spell of good weather has had a positive impact on sales of seasonal items according to the latest figures from Musgrave MarketPlace.

Ireland’s leading wholesale supplier to foodservice, retail and SME businesses has reported a surge in sales over the last month as local shops, newsagents, convenience stores and forecourts try to keep up with the demand for summer products.

With the recent spell of good weather set to continue for the next week at least, it seems that retailers are expecting this weekend to be all about barbecues and 99s.

Sales of ice cream mix for whipped cones have increased by a staggering 134% in the last month equating to a massive 1,068,240 cone servings – that’s over 600,000 more 99s than last year! In the same period in 2017, the amount of ice cream mix sold equated to a cool 456,360 cone servings.

Instant barbecues and charcoal sales are also heating up (+26%) compared to the same period last year while fresh burgers and chicken have increased 65% and 15% respectively. Burger buns and hot dog buns are also up significantly (over 50%) and condiments such as ketchup, vinegar and mustard have risen by 9%.

Commenting Sheena Forde, Trading Director at Musgrave MarketPlace said: “This has been the hottest summer for over 30 years and we have seen a huge demand from our retail customers for seasonal items such as ice cream mix for cones. The combination of prolonged sunny weather coupled with a busy summer of sport has been a welcome boost for retailers around the country.

As Ireland’s leading wholesale supplier to retail, we are well prepared for the sunny temperatures and we’re well stocked to ensure we can keep Ireland in 99s for the rest of the summer!”
