UPMC Whitfield Gerry ODonoghueGerry O’Donoghue, Lead Breast Cancer Surgeon at UPMC Whitfield, the largest private hospital in the South East, has been appointed Honorary Clinical Associate Professor by the Academic Council of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

The honorary promotion recognises an individual’s sustained contribution to RCSI and its students, as well as their academic achievements.

Professor O’Donoghue is a leading breast surgeon in the South East, and has been treating patients at UPMC Whitfield for nearly three years. His specialist areas of expertise include benign and malignant breast disease, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, skin cancer treatments, including melanoma, radiotherapy and endoscopy. He holds an honours degree from the RCSI and was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine by the same institution in 2005 for his research into breast cancer treatment.

LCE First Aid

In order to maintain your qualification after your two-year certification period, it is mandatory that you undertake a refresher course. The refresher course is now a two-day course intended to refresh the skills and knowledge you learned from your original training. You must have a valid First Aid Response certificate in order to participate on this course.

If your First Aid Certificate is due for renewal then you must ensure to get refresher training PRIOR to the expiry date. Once the date is passed, your certificate is invalid.

Therefore it is important to have your certificates up to date in lieu of the liability of having uncertified first aid responders in-situ.

Irish Legislation: Mental Health and the Workplace

It is important for employers and employees to know about their legislative rights and responsibilities in relation to mental health at work. Two of the most relevant pieces of legislation are The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (SHWW Act) and the Employment Equality Acts 1998-2015. Under Section 19 of the SHWW Act employers are obliged to carry out a risk assessment and advise employees of the outcome.

Reasonable Accommodation for Mental Health Risks.

The application of equality legislation to people with mental health difficulties is broad. The following mental health difficulties have been found to be included within the definition of disability: Depression, reactive depression, stress, anxiety and depression, severe generalised anxiety disorder, alcoholism, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, schizophrenia, anorexia, stress, work related stress. Employers are now obliged to provide reasonable accommodation for employees with disabilities.

Learning objectives: Those attending this presentation will learn about the following

  • Explaining the evolution from duty of care to reasonable accommodation and the implications for employer liability.
  • How to conduct a behavioural risk assessment for all risks, including mental health and disabilities.
