It all adds up to great maths fun at Spraoi

Mathematical Entertainer Caroline AinsleyMaths Ireland, coordinated by Calmast, Waterford Institute of Technology’s groundbreaking STEM engagement centre, is once again celebrating maths during Spraoi. As one of the festival’s creative partners, Calmast brings workshops, demos and activities to thousands of people over two days of Spraoi.

Spraoi is a free urban festival with performers from all over the world taking place from 2-4 August on the streets of Waterford.

The all-weekend festival features Irish and international artists, street performers and musicians and attracts more than 100,000 visitors over three days.

Ben Dolan, Maths Ireland Digital Engagement Manager, says “We’re delighted to be part of such an inspiring festival and to bring maths to the streets of Waterford. Maths Ireland will present hands-on puzzles, games and other activities for all on Hanover Street, 3 and 4 August, from 1pm.”

For several years now Hanover Street turns into STEM Street during the Spraoi weekend. “Everyone is welcome to engage in exciting experiments, intriguing chemistry demos, hands-on physics, and much more with Calmast, the Physics Buskers, Mathematical Entertainer Caroline Ainslie and Juggling Scientist James Soper, who will also present their shows in Garter Lane Theatre and on Gladstone Street,” adds Dolan.

The STEM events organised by Calmast are supported by Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), Garter Lane Arts Centre, the overall coordinator of the SprÓg Festival, and local companies EirGen Pharma, Sanofi, Bausch and Lomb, GSK, MSD, and SFI.

This wonderful, family friendly event will see you use maths in ways you’d never expect, get drawn in by fun challenges, puzzles and games and discover the wonderful world of numbers, shapes and all of maths! See you at Spraoi.
